Dr. KT Waxman has over 25 years of experience as a nurse leader in California. She is president and CEO of Waxman & Associates, LLC, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dr. Waxman is the Program Director for the Bay Area Simulation Collaborative (BASC) and the California Simulation Alliance (CSA) for the California Institute for Nursing & Health Care (CINHC). Dr. Waxman is also assistant professor at the University of San Francisco's School of Nursing's Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs.
Waxman began her career as an RN at UCLA Medical Center in the medical/surgical division. She has since held such positions as vice president for patient-care services, chief nursing officer (CNO), director of critical care, chief operating officer of acute-care hospitals and senior manager of a large consulting firm. She has also managed the healthcare clients of an e-learning company in San Francisco as well as the health careers mentor for Monster.com.
A nationally known speaker, Waxman addresses such topics as leadership development, healthcare finance, networking and clinical simulation. Her work can also be read in numerous healthcare publications, such as Clinical Simulation in Nursing, the Journal of Nursing Education, Nurse Leader and NurseWeek. She also published the book A Practical Guide to Finance and Budgeting: Skills for Nurse Managers, now in its second edition.
Through the CINHC, she is a certified facilitator for "Leading Empowered Organizations" (LEO), a three-day program through which healthcare employees learn effective, practical and proven models and strategies for developing leadership teams that can change the culture of their organizations.
Waxman is a faculty member for the California Center for Nursing Leadership, a comprehensive program for aspiring nurse leaders jointly sponsored by the CINHC and the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL). Waxman is a past president of the ACNL and has served on its board of directors. She is an active member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and serves on several of its committees. She is currently the chair of the Membership and Bylaws Committee for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).
Waxman holds an RN degree from Napa Valley College, a bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, an MBA from the University of La Verne, and she completed her DNP in 2008 from the University of San Francisco with a concentration in health systems leadership, and an emphasis on simulation.
