KT Waxman, DNP, MBA, RN, CNL, CENP
President & CEO
Dr. KT Waxman is a nurse leader with nearly 30 years of experience in health care and corporate settings. She is president and CEO of Waxman & Associates, LLC, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dr. Waxman is also a tenure-earning assistant professor and chair of the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) program at the University of San Francisco (USF). She coordinates and teaches financial management in both the traditional and executive leader DNP programs. Dr. Waxman is the director of the California Simulation Alliance (CSA) at the California Institute for Nursing & Health Care (CINHC), a 3,000-member organization. Her focus is in leadership development and human factors.
Waxman began her career as an RN at UCLA Medical Center in the medical/surgical division. She has since held such positions as vice president for patient-care services, chief nursing officer (CNO), director of critical care, chief operating officer of acute-care hospitals and senior manager of a large consulting firm. She has also managed the health care clients of an e-learning company in San Francisco as well as the health careers mentor for Monster.com.
An internationally known speaker, Waxman addresses such topics as leadership development, healthcare finance, networking and clinical simulation. She is currently serving as co-chair of the 2013 International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). Dr. Waxman has spoken at conferences and universities across the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Her work can also be read in numerous healthcare publications, such as Clinical Simulation in Nursing, Journal of Nursing Education, Nurse Leader, and NurseWeek. Dr. Waxman wrote the book A Practical Guide to Finance and Budgeting: Skills for Nurse Managers, now in its second edition. In a second textbook to be published this fall by Springer, Financial and Business Skills for Doctor of Nursing Practice Students, Waxman served as editor and contributing author.
Waxman is a faculty member for the California Center for Nursing Leadership, a comprehensive program for aspiring nurse leaders jointly sponsored by the CINHC and the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL). Waxman is a past president of the ACNL and has served on its board of directors. She is an active member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and serves on its international committee. She is currently the chair of the Membership and Bylaws Committee for the SSH.
Waxman holds an RN degree from Napa Valley College, a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, an MBA from the University of La Verne, and she completed her DNP in 2008 from USF with a concentration in health systems leadership, and an emphasis on simulation.
